A
report analyzing the root causes and escalation processes of various
conflicts between communities in the Northwest province is to be
published soon by LUKMEF-Cameroon. After three weeks in the field, the
team of the peace department came back on 13th July 2007 and is
currently analyzing the information gathered. The draft report is to be
presented to the chiefs and leaders of the Fondoms we visited by end of
August and is scheduled to be released in September.
Among
the conflicts covered in the report are the most recent ones between
Oku - Mbessa and Bali Nyonga - Bawock that made the news earlier this
year, but also older conflicts between Balikumbat - Bafanji or Babanki
Tungo - Bambili, amongst others. All conflicts pitted two communities
or Fondoms against each other over land claims or boundary disputes,
making the report, to be published soon, a hallmark document on the
root causes of land-related inter-community conflicts."

- During the NoWeFU (Northwest Fons Union) Assembly
on 23rd June 2007 we were given the opportunity to present our project
to the Fons assembled in Bamenda Congress Hall.
- Not all roads were good on our way. Thanks to 4WD and help
from various people on our way, we managed to reach all villages in our
program.
- Alarmingly from the perspective of peace educators,
small boys in conflict areas 'train' on toy-weapons, thereby learning
an identity as a warrior.
- A lot of our information had to be gathered through discussions with villagers.
- One source of information was a quetionnaire we had
developed to investigate into issues of conflicts and development, to
be filled by inhabitants of the community we visited (with our help,
sometimes).
